Time to relax, reflect and catch up….

Wow! Where has the fall gone??? All my good intentions to post news and tidbits from the Higgins House and Historic Sanford on a regular basis have taken a long time to implement… probably much like your life these past few weeks. It seems like a long time since the Dorian Dud, so what’s happened since? Well… at the Higgins House, we’re into our fall season with fall decorations up, the lovely fall china on the breakfast table, and the enticing aromas of pumpkin spice, gingerbread and molasses wafting out from the kitchen. Our new fall plantings are slowly taking shape in the gardens, the kitchen garden is being refreshed with new herbs and cool season crops (just the opposite growing seasons than those up north), and the overgrown palm gardens, vines and shrubs are finally getting cleaned up.

We are also getting ready for several fabulous events: welcoming back Phantasmagoria for our 2nd Annual amazing and entertaining Halloween collaboration on October 30th. Once again, you’re invited to a one-of-a-kind immersive walk through experience – with individual rooms full of poetry and haunted experiences, grand tricks and tales in the Living room, and of course, fire dancing outdoors! Shows are at 7pm, 8pm and 9pm. (Click here for more information and to buy your tickets: 2nd Phantasmagoria Halloween Theatrical Performance).

We are also pleased to announce a collaboration with Michelle Mourneault who will be giving entertaining guided tours of spirits of another kind: Whisky tastings! This will be an opportunity to discover little known gems of unique and boutique spirits, gain a comprehensive understanding of how each was created and what makes it unique… all in the lovely, intimate setting of the Higgins House living and dining rooms. After the tastings, there will be delicious, complimentary nibbles, as well as the opportunity to purchase full pours and/or full bottles. To reserve your space, click here and scroll down to the Course Catalog: Whisky Tastings ) By the way, this would make a great gift for someone! (Hint! Hint!)

Historic Downtown Sanford has been rocking, also, with Hollerbach’s annual Oktoberfest last weekend, Celery City Cat Cafe’s elegant Catsino soiree (a “pet” project of Thor’s and his fellow porch mates), and the always excellent shows and performances at the Wayne Densch Theater and the new West End Theater. Still to come in the next couple weeks includes the:

  • Sanford Avenue Block Party (Oct 26),
  • the Taste of Sanford (Oct 28, check the Sanford Chamber of Commerce to see if there are still tickets!),
  • the Rocky Horror Picture show at the Wayne Densch Theater (Oct 31), and
  • Phantasmagoria’s full length show at the Wayne Densch Theater (Nov 1).

If you’re planning even further ahead, there’s

  • Alive After 5’s Chili Cook-off on Nov 14,
  • Reninger’s Antique Extravaganza (Nov 15-17th), and
  • Harmonica Workshop at the Alley (Nov 21,22, 23rd)

For all the many other events going on in Sanford, check out Historic Downtown Sanford (Historic Downtown Sanford or

So, you feeling overwhelmed, too? Need a chance to catch your breath?

Escape for a day or two and come relax at the Higgins House: sit on the porch, on the balcony, on the back deck….  Figure out the rest of your fall and holiday plans, stroll downtown and have an excellent meal, take in a show, sit on a bench at the lake or a park…  give yourself a day (or two) to catch your breath from the previous weeks, and set yourself up to be ready for the holidays.

Regards, Lisa

Thor’s warming up your seat!
